COMMIT THY WAY
PSALM 37:5-6 “Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.”
The higher life based on a firm and hearty commitment is sustained by faith. It will be continuously unfolded in a glorious climax.
This is the forth precept given to us here, as saints, to put into practice. These are the steps a good man is to take, as ordered by the Lord. He will not fret over nor envy the prosperity of the wicked, understanding the brevity of their pleasure.
A good man is directed to fret not, nor envy, he is to trust in the Lord and do good. He is to turn his eyes away from the people all around him and look to Him who is above, the only downward look is to be to the solid foundation of God’s Word which he is standing upon and walking in. And he is to do good, do his duty. Do with his might what God has placed in his hands to do.
God will lead us in a “plain path,” so we will not try to do things not placed in our hands by God. We will not be able to do all that those around us consider to be our duty. Life is too short for us to do all of that, but we will be able to do our God-ordained duty.
We are to delight ourselves in the Lord and, as here, “commit thy way unto the Lord.” “He shall bring it to pass.”
Verse 6 assures us that God will take care of our reputation even if it is tainted by slander. We are to keep ourselves unspotted from the world and to carefully take measures not to appear to do evil.
In such situations when Satan, the accuser, is using his agents to accuse the saints wrongly, we are to “sit still,” as an old saint said, for he will clear us.
A good name can be marred for a time, but in due time, God will take away every shadow of reproach and greater honor shall be given him or her by the Lord.
We are to walk in His ways and look to him. He will meet our needs if we do. There will no need to fret or envy others’ prosperity. Feasting at the Lord’s table will banish forever the hungry heart burnings of envy.
