EMMAUS ROAD DISCIPLES

LUKE 24: 13-14 “And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.  And they talked together of all these things which had happened.”

These two disciples were living on the memory of a dead Christ rather than living in communion with the Living Lord. Their chronology was correct, it had been three days, their theology was correct, they believed that He was the Redeemer of Israel, but they had no doxology. Their facts were right, but their conclusions were wrong. As some sermons seem to be.

These disciples were troubled when they should have been triumphant; sad when they should have been shouting; sobbing when they should have been singing; because He had risen indeed! He was dead and is alive forevermore!

They were opening their mouths, but they were not real witnesses, they were trying to pump water out of a dry well, which is impossible. This was indeed the third day, their facts were right, but they concluded defeat when their conclusion should have been victory.

They needed to realize that the living Lord, the resurrected Lord and Savior, was beside them and as He opened the Scriptures to them, it stirred their hearts and everything changed, instead of a hopeless heartache, they had a holy heartburn. Their eyes were opened and they rushed out to tell the story, the blessed story, “He is risen indeed.”

There are many believers in this state today, who are blind to the victory which is in Jesus Christ, they are occupied with many true facts, as these disciples in their thinking were, but they also still have Christ in the grave. “He is alive,” is our message, actually, “He was dead and is alive forevermore.” Let us tell this blessed old, old story, in the light of His promised return. Perhaps, it will be soon. Let us be waiting, watching and working,

In His Amazing Grace,

Pastor Ed Bowen
