A Meeting With The Lord
Luke 24:32
“And they said one to another; did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the Scriptures?”
These Emmaus disciples had already met the Lord at Calvary’s cross, or in the shadow of the cross for them, for His “hour,” of which He often spoke did come and He died for the sins of the whole world on the cross. They knew Him and believed Him to be the Redeemer of Israel. (vs. 31). Now, they were discouraged for their hopes had not been fulfilled as they expected they would be.
The words they uttered, “This is the third day,” should have been uttered with a hallelujah instead of a heartache, because the Lord arose “on the third day,” that was His promise, that was their hope.
So, now in their condition, a meeting with the Lord was needed. He graciously draws near, as He always does to His own, He condescends to our weaknesses and accepts our invitation to “abide with us,” and when he does, He becomes the host instead of the guest. He blesses and breaks the bread of life and gives it unto us, and our hearts are stirred.
Any true meeting with the Lord stirs our hearts, and instead of heartache, we have heartburn, spiritual heartburn, which stirs us to spiritual action.
Notice, it is first begun by the opening of the Scriptures, this leads to our hearts being stirred in the right way.
A genuine meeting with the Lord is based on the truth of the Word of God, not on feelings, but that does not mean we don’t feel happy when He stirs our hearts, we do have feelings and they are real. A real revival in the heart produces Hallelujahs and holy heartburn. We cannot help but feel the blessedness of such a meeting, and of such a spiritual experience. And it will stir us to spiritual action; it will send us out to tell the story, the old, old story of Jesus and His love.
